PROMISES OF PRAYER
Many people are uncomfortable in prayer for varied reasons.
Some have never learned to pray or to talk to an unseen entity.
Some feel uncomfortable asking for help or guidance from someone else, simply because they have failed to give full control of their lives over to the one who created them.
Some have had bad or disappointing experiences concerning Gods promises as related to them by overzealous people.
While the following topics are not in any manner complete, they can bring understanding and council of many matters involving prayer.
We can approach God boldly through Jesus, our high priest, who understands our needs.
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16
We should cast all of our anxiety on the Lord.
“Humble yourself therefore under the mighty hand of God, the he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
We should pray instead of worrying.
“Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be make known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
Pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances.
“Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18
Pray in faith.
“If any of your lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraided not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” James 1:5-7
Pray for healing.
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual and fervent prayer of a righteous man availed much.” James 5:16
The prayer of the righteous is powerful.
See also James 5:16
Dare to pray for great things as Elijah prayed.
“Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. An he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”
James 5:17-18
God will give us guidance if we ask for it.
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jeremiah 33:3
God hears and answers our prayer; he is near to his children.
“The eves of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.
The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivered them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.’ Psalm 34:15-18
Trusting God to answer prayer does not mean inactivity.
“Nevertheless we made our prayer unto God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.” Nehemiah 4:9
There are often times in prayer when as a human no words or thoughts that we can compose seem sufficient to relay our concerns and the desires of our inner beings, we become undone and unsure; that in itself is not such a bad thing because it is then that the Holy Spirit can intercede if we will allow Him to.
At times the Blessed Holy Spirit will pray for those things that we do not understand.
“But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:25-27
The primary thing to remember in prayer is that God desires for us to talk with Him, and it is His great pleasure to hear those that come to Him only in the name of Jesus.
John 14:13-14
